“The intuitive expression of energy and movement through bold color is my soul work.”
Julie Schumer is a lawyer by trade and an artist by choice who is known for her bold, colorful, and dynamic paintings that embody her abstract interpretations of the natural world, as well as her interior landscape, and reflect her life in the desert as well as her lifelong travels in the tropics. Strongly influenced by the abstract expressionists of the 1950s and 1960s, Julie’s artworks are filled with movement and energy. Typically, Julie begins her creative process by introducing color, shapes, and lines, and then rearranges these elements around, adding and removing paint in multiple layers. She primarily works with acrylic paint on canvas, birch panel, or paper. She frequently uses items such as rubber spatulas and bondo knives, as well as cut cardboard as scrapers and/or paint applicators but her work is generally more intuitive than deliberate. Julie was raised in Los Angeles, California, and currently lives and works in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
